Tackling Project Clutter | Sakeenah.com 5

Tackling Project Clutter

I need a UFO (unfinished object) intervention before even picking up a crochet hook. Lately I have this desperate need to get my yarn and stash down to absolute zero. A nice controlled burn to nothing and buy on an as-needed basis only. I know this is akin to fiber art sacrilege here. Everybody needs a hoard, right? I can’t do it anymore. I feel like every weekend for a year is booked with knitting and crochet projects I don’t want to really even do. Organizing my yarn stash by fiber type into plastic bins helped a little. I could...

Too Much Yarn? If you are ready to commit to the no new yarn challenge, just use the #UseItUpYarnChallenge and we will all find each other. Sakeenah.com 3

The Use it Up Yarn Challenge

After a good year of processing my eco guilt about becoming a yarn consumer, I’m finally ready to really put on the brakes on yarn shopping. Especially after reviewing The Handknitter’s Yarn Guide, it really hit home that not every yarn choice is sustainable or good for the environment. I understood this before, but I was caught in the newbie glee of buying crochet supplies.  So here we are, at a decision that it’s time to stop buying yarn, dun, dun, dun! Do you think it’s time you went on a yarn diet? OK and truth be told, the other reason...

Find Local Yarn Suppliers on LocalHarvest

If you’re looking to expand your horizons beyond the big box craft stores, I’d like to introduce you to LocalHarvest, a website where you can find and support local farmers. You can search for CSAs, farms, farmers’ markets, local events, and also shop online from farms all over the US. I first discovered LocalHarvest when I wanted to find some luffa seeds, which I easily found in the shop section. Here are my luffas happily growing this past summer. LocalHarvest says on their about page: Our directory lists over 30,000 family farms and farmers markets, along with restaurants and grocery...

The Handknitter's Yarn Guide - Book Review of this Essential Resource for Knitters and Crocheters 5

Book Review: The Handknitter’s Yarn Guide

I have been wanting to learn about different types of fiber for a while, but kept finding myself gravitating back to acrylic, acrylic blends or cotton blends. These are the types of fiber I am most comfortable with using just out of habit. I have a good idea now how these fibers behave and that is really helpful when planning a project. But when I wanted to start exploring other yarn, it was a little confusing.  How do you find the yarn that has it all,  if such a wonderful thing exists? Maybe you want an economical yarn that’s washable...

First Impression of Berroco Comfort Yarn - Review | Sakeenah 9

A First Impression of Berroco Comfort Yarn – Review

Berroco Comfort is my first foray into the world of the LYS (local yarn shop). I wanted to try out this yarn and found that a close by yarn shop carried it, so away we went. I have since figured out there are a few places to order Berroco Comfort yarn online, but I do like being able to stop in and see the colors for myself. After making a few blankets with it, I’m sharing my review. Here I am reviewing the worsted weight of Berroco comfort. What you get: Berroco Comfort is 50% nylon and 50% acrylic. Full...

Find Good Deals on Yarn at Tuesday Morning - Sakeenah 6

Check the Store Tuesday Morning for Yarn Deals

I keep hearing about the store Tuesday Morning as a good place to find deals on craft items like yarn and sewing notions. I finally got the chance to head on in there. It has a fun vibe to the place and there are lots of different offerings. I was with my 4 year old who started asking for everything in the store, so I made a quick beeline for the crafts. There was a small section of yarn. They had some hanks of hand-dyed Andes wool for around $8. They were very nice looking, but I didn’t have plans...

Thoughts on Becoming a Yarn Consumer

Internet jokes abound about yarn shopping/hoarding addictions. No doubt you’ve seen this: I laughed, you laughed and then probably we all headed over to Joann’s website to look for sales. Reviving crochet in my life has changed my habits of consumption. Prior to becoming a yarn addict, I tried hard to avoid buying anything new, joining The Compact for a year and striving to curb my use of plastic – thanks for the inspiration, Beth Terry. Then just like that,  I found myself gleefully in the checkout line of big box craft stores with pounds of acrylic in my arms....

Shetland Chunky Tweeds 4

Patons Shetland Chunky Tweeds Yarn Review

Patons Shetland Chunky Yarn is a Bulky weight yarn that comes in solids, tweeds and variegated. It is 75% acrylic and 25% wool, so it is considered easy care and washable.   I grabbed a couple of skeins in color Earthy Brown Tweed to make my father a scarf and wanted to share my impression of this yarn. Until now, I really haven’t found a nice wool blend that I want to use as a go-to yarn. Lion Brand’s Wool Ease is ok, but I found the scarf I made for my son stretched out after washing. Maybe I could...
