Book Review: Contemporary Celtic Crochet by Bonnie Barker
Aran Celtic crochet is my all time favorite style of crochet. Hailing from Ireland, Celtic crochet is known for it’s rich cables and textured stitches. While the projects may look intricate and complicated, with practice the stitches are really not hard. It just all comes together beautifully.
Book Review
When I saw that Aran crochet designer Bonnie Barker was coming out with a new book, Contemporary Celtic Crochet, I knew this pattern book was joining my collection. What a fun mail day when it finally arrived! After spending some time looking through the book and planning projects, I know if you love anything in the Aran style, this book is a must have.
Order Contemporary Celtic Crochet directly through the publisher, Interweave.
Contemporary Celtic Crochet does not disappoint. It is a full-sized book, 127 pages, with 24 stunning designs. The first section of the book is a crochet stitch guide that shows step-by-step pictures of every stitch used in the book, including the arrow, basket weave, back post double crochet and more.
The patterns and techniques are skill-building, starting with easy patterns, advancing to intermediate and then experienced, something for every level.
What I really love about Contemporary Celtic Crochet is that there are so many different types of projects; sweaters, scarves, hats, bags, wraps, even a baby blanket. I also enjoy the way the author’s love of Ireland comes through in her travel tales and beautiful pictures. Bonnie puts a contemporary spin on these traditional designs, so they look fresh. My favorite project is the sweater wrap which is a wrap with a back panel that looks like the back of a Fisherman’s sweater, as seen on the front cover. Something new and really creative!
If you are looking for truly unique projects with some flair, this is the book for you.
