In a stashbusting mood and need some ideas to use up all that scrap yarn? There are tons of ways to use up that extra yarn, but I’d like to share with you a quick and fun project that my youngest son really appreciated: Make a scrap blanket for your kid’s stuffed toys.

This works up fast and is nice therapeutic mindless crochet. You can even use a doll scrapghan as an excuse to try out a new stitch or technique.

After hoarding collecting all my yarn scraps over time, I came across this great idea on Fresh Stitches to make a magic ball. A magic ball is your very own ball of artisan yarn that you would pay nicely for from someone else. They are really fun to make. You connect all your scraps using the Russian join and wind them up until you have a truly unique ball of yarn to work with of various colors and fibers.  I’m sure this works out really well if you are organized and whatnot and separate your scraps by weight.

And then just crochet away! I had fun making a few doll sized scrap blankets. It was nice to see colors come together that I normally wouldn’t have mixed.

I think this would also be a great way to use up left over yarn when making a blanket for a child and give their stuffed toy a matching blankie.

And here is Ducky with his new blanket, all ready for bed.

What’s your favorite stashbusting project? How do you use up scraps? Let me know in the comments.

I love this! I’ve been trying to think of ways to use some of our scraps, and half the time it just ends up as ties for something for the kids, but this is so much better. Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to make something for the bajillion dolls and stuffed animals we have around the house. 🙂

  2. Great project for yarn scraps! I bet your son really appreciates his new ducky blanket. The fact that mommy made it makes it all the more special. 🙂

Cute idea! Scraps can make unique items. I have a blanket made out of jean scraps, it has a variety of shades of blue. The corner of each square is tied with yarn to give it a splash of color.

HI Nooria, I love that idea! Did you sew it or crochet?

It was made by my Grandmother as a gift for me (She was old when she made it and said she made it as a keepsake for after she passed to remember her by.) She joined the squares of jean on her sewing machine and then made a kind of decorative knot in each corner from yarn with a hand needle. It is a very unique blanket with a lot of love and memories.

This is a great use of scraps! I’m so behind on making things for my little one, I currently owe her a few baby blankets and a bunny. At least I got her hat ready for winter, now to just get the matching mittens done.
