Featured Free Crochet Pattern: Cable Hat by Sarah Arnold
If you are looking for a nice free crochet pattern for a cable hat, check out Sarah Arnold’s Cable Hat pattern (now a free Ravelry download). The pattern calls for front post double and treble crochet (fpdc and fptr) as well as back post double crochet (bpdc).
Here is the first cable hat I made for hubby with this pattern. I used Patons Superwash DK in grey. He says it came out super warm and still hasn’t started wearing it yet. He said he’s reserving it for true winter weather.
Sarah states in the instructions that it is not a beginner’s pattern. However, her instructions are clear and with very detailed pictures showing you where to cross over for the cables. I would say you could consider it a beginner’s cable pattern, meaning if you are new to crocheting cables or want help with crochet cables, this would be a great hat to get you started. The Ravelry page for this pattern has over 1,000 projects listed and they all look great.
This next one I made for my oldest son using Stylecraft Special DK. It is not as thick and heavy as the first wool one and he wears it all the time now. It was fun to change colors for the brim. Next time I’d like to do a row of single crochet after the last cable and before starting the ribbing of the brim. I think it will make the color change smoother.
Are you addicted to cables yet? The Cable Hat pattern is a nice one to add to your collection. Check out Sarah Arnold’s other patterns too.
Page link doesn’t work anymore! Where can I get the pattern for this???
HI, Thanks for the heads up! It looks like her site is down and the pattern is now available as a free Ravelry download: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cable-hat
I updated the post. 😀
This is such a cute hat! I made a baby hat with this stitch before. What I liked about it was the extra stretchiness. Reminded me of a knitted hat.
I love this hat pattern and love your choice in yarn. I have some Patons superwash worsted laying around, I need to go ahead an use it. I bought it when I first started knitting and have just been hoarding it for some reason.
I’d love to see it. With this pattern I went through 2 or even 3 skeins in DK, worsted only 1.
